In New Zealand, it took until the end of the 90’s for the beer revolution to get started – but once it got going there were new breweries opening every now and then. One of the many breweries started in Carl Vastas’ garden in the hills of Waikanae. Carl is an engineer with the palate of a wine critic. Quickly Carl had created a superb range of ales, porters and pilsners for his friends under the name Tuatara. In recent years the Tuatara has grown into a brewery that produces about a million liters of beer a year and is one of the leading breweries in New Zealand. Tuatara are sold throughout New Zealand and are also distributed worldwide – and is making its debut in Sweden this week 🙂
It began when Tuatara Brewery brewed the APA (American Pale Ale) and ran out of American hops (!). This resulted in the brewery turning to a more local solution and created a beer made of hops from New Zealand. Aotearoa is the Maori name for New Zealand. The literal translation of Aotearoa is “the land of the long white cloud”. The product quickly became popular and has won several awards including a gold medal in the ‘Brewers Guild of New Zealand’ for ‘International Ale Styles’.
Tuataras APA has a complex flavor of spices, citrus and grapefruit with a crispy hop finish.
